Are Pies The Perfect Sunday Dinner Choice?

‘The tradition of the Sunday feast accomplishes more than just feeding us. It nurtures us.’ – Chef John Besh

The Sunday dinner represents far more than just a meal occasion to us in Britain. It represents an opportunity to spend time with family and bond over a filling and delicious meal, making the most of the more relaxed pace of the weekend compared to the working week.

To understand where the British tradition of the great Sunday dinner originates, we have to go all the way back to Medieval times. Towards the end of the 15th century, it became an increasingly popular meal whereby families making their way to church would bring along a joint of meat (usually beef) to pop into the baker’s oven on the way. Bread wasn’t baked on Sundays leaving the ovens free for local people to be able to utilise them and roast their meat whilst attending church. Once their religious duties had been carried out, they would collect their cooked roast meat from the baker and take it home, serving it with whatever vegetables were available to them at the time.

In recent times, the traditional Sunday dinner has come under threat. Modern life has meant we are often much busier at weekends, with more people than ever struggling to find time to sit down together to eat a home cooked roast dinner. The rising cost of food (particularly meat) and energy have also contributed to us eating roast dinners less frequently.

For people living alone or couples, it makes increasingly less sense to invest the time and money required to cook a Sunday roast, with many opting to eat out instead. But the costs of eating a roast dinner at a pub or restaurant have sky-rocketed in the past few years, as the significant increases in food, labour and energy costs have made it an increasingly expensive affair.

The Sunday dinner is an important meal occasion and not one that we want to lose in Britain. As a nation, it’s important we don’t lose the tradition of taking time to sit down and eat a hearty and delicious meal together.

With that in mind, could the pie be a perfect solution for Sunday dinner?

Many of our customers have told us that they are now having Yorkshire Handmade Pies for their Sunday meal, which piqued our curiosity. We reached out to a few to find out more, and here’s what they had to say:

🥧   The cost of meat is now so high that pies offer a great way of eating it more cost effectively.

🥧  As it costs more to use the oven, pies cook in a shorter time than a large joint of meat and can also be cooked in the air fryer, meaning in some cases the oven doesn’t need to be used at all.

🥧    Portion control is much easier, no worry about leftovers or what to do with extra meat.

🥧   Pies pair perfectly with all the Sunday trimmings such as vegetables, Yorkshire puddings and gravy.

🥧   Pies require no preparation and can be taken straight from the freezer and baked in the oven or air fryer with no mess or handling of raw meat required.

The good news doesn’t stop there. Because our recently launched range of in-house chef-prepared side dishes offer you everything you need to make a stunning Sunday dinner pie meal.
